New Tank and Sand Issues
I just got the cubed, 30 gallon tank for my hermits for my birthday and I was all excited to set it up. So, I went to PetCo to look for the right sand to put in it, since at $5.99 dollars a 2lb bag of CalsiSand gets expensive to fill a 30 gallon tank. Well I found Nature's Ocean White Marine Sand for $7.99 a 10lb bag, I thought what a deal. Not such a deal though, on average I would save about $3.00/10lbs and I found that the sand is mined silica. Silica is death to hermit crabs. So, I guess I am just going to go back and get the damn CalsiSand for them.
The tricky thing about this bag of sand is that it says it is 100% beach sand and there is no label saying that the sand consists soley of mined silica. Thank God I read my email from the Crabstreet Journal today, otherwise I would have set up my tank and brought on a slow death to my little crabbies. Sometimes the cheap alternative is not the right alternative.
